Community in the ESOL Classroom: Large Lessons in the Everyday, Part 1

By Christine Poreba, with thanks to Julie Boutwell-Peterson, Susan Lester and Charles Greenwell for their contribution of ideas

Establishing a strong sense of community at the beginning of the year is essential for any classroom. It seems especially important, however, in a room of students from diverse countries, all of whom will undertake the challenging task of communicating in a language other than their own. Below is a list, compiled with the help of fellow ESOL teachers at ACE, of some successful, community-building activities which are ideal for those first few months of school.
