Quick Interview Tips

by Sue Kraul

  1. Dress to impress - but dress appropriately for the job. A business suit is not the best choice for a gardening position.

  2. Arrive early - be prepared for traffic tie-ups or parking problems. Better to be calm and composed than running in out of breath and frazzled.

  3. Look the interviewer in the eye - maintaining eye contact indicates good self-esteem and confidence in your abilities.

  4. Offer a firm handshake - especially important for women during that awkward moment when introductions first take place. It establishes that you are in control (rather than cowering in the corner from nervousness!)

  5. Smile - conveys a friendly attitude and ability to function in stressful situations.

  6. Ask Questions - shows initiative in learning more about the business and your interest in working there.

  7. Express thanks - for the opportunity to meet the employer and his time spent interviewing you.

  8. Ask for follow-up - get a definite date when you should expect notification or should contact them for further instructions.

  9. Collect all your belongings - you'll feel foolish if you have to go back to retrieve something left behind.
