The Even Start Family Literacy Program

The Even Start Family Literacy Program addresses the basic educational needs of parents and children up to age eight from low-income families by providing a unified program of (1) adult basic or secondary education and literacy programs for parents, (2) assistance for parents to effectively promote their children's educational development, and (3) early childhood education for children. Projects provide some services directly, and build on existing community resources by collaborating with other service providers.

Build Literacy

This website, was launched on June 17, 2001 at the American Library Association's Annual Conference in San Francisco, California. Buildliteracy.org is an interactive how-to web site for building and sustaining literacy coalitions. Although is has a library focus it is not exclusively for libraries. The content of the site is relevant to any person, group or organization interested in literacy coalition building. the intro to this site is a short survey to which the sponsors would appreciate visitors, responding. Buildliteracy.org answers Frequently Asked Question about adult literacy, libraries, and coalitions. The site features sections on coalition building, profiles of existing literacy @ your library. Buildliteracy.org is designed to be field-based, user-friendly and dynamic.

Florida Literacy Coalition

Online Reading Resource
The Literacy Essentials and Reading Network (LEaRN) website is funded by Just Read, Florida! and was developed by the North East Florida Educational Consortium. LEaRN provides short video clips of effective and research-proven reading instruction in Florida classrooms.

This is an excellent web site that teaches the reader how to look for the main idea in a passage, and follows the examples with plenty of practice exercises. It is for kids but you might look at it to get ideas and examples to use with your student.

2. http://www.cerritos.edu/reading/tutorials.htm

This web site is great for showing what the main idea of a paragraph is but explanation is written for high school level students. The lesson does give a lot of practice on the site. Also a lesson on vocabulary in context is presented.

3. http://literacynet.org/cnnsf/

This is a web site that is hosted by CNN and features current stories and video for beginning adult readers. The story has 2 reading levels and has practice exercises for comprehension and vocabulary.

WRITING WEB SITES

Every-day Edits is a web site that is good for helping students to improve their proof reading skills. These short articles have 10 mistakes in them that the student will need to find and correct. These mistakes are errors that writers commonly make in spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.

Here's your chance to practice spelling the most misspelled words on the GED test. These exercises are in a hangman game format.

3. http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/index.htm A guide to grammar and writing. For the very advance student. Has practice exercises and quizzes.

This web site has web lessons on math, social studies, history, science and language arts. It is a site for children but some of the lessons aren’t too kiddy and are excellent for explaining some of tougher math skills.

Lessons and practice exercises from the Missouri Valley Adult Education Association for teaching use of the Casio fx-260 calculator. The lessons are in Adobe PDF format or text version for instructors' use.
